A position as a Firefighter I with CAL FIRE is the primary Entry Level gateway into the world of professional wildland and structural firefighting in California. This is a Seasonal, temporary role where employees work under close supervision to perform a full range of firefighting duties. The mission is critical: the suppression of vehicle, building, improvement, and vegetation fires to protect California’s natural resources and communities.

As a member of a high-performance crew, you will receive extensive training in wildland and structural fire suppression techniques. The job is physically demanding and involves using specialized tools—such as the Pulaski, McLeod, shovel, and back pump—to clear trails and cut brush. Beyond the fire line, duties include station housekeeping, equipment repair, and “fail-safe” maintenance of fire hoses and apparatus.

Positions Available

The Firefighter I classification is a non-supervisory, front-line role. Successful applicants are categorized into “Hiring Categories” based on their previous experience and training:

Category 0

Applicants with returnee rights to a specific CAL FIRE Unit.

Category 1

“Fully Trained” applicants who have completed all required CAL FIRE trainings.

Category 2

“Partially Trained” applicants with at least one required or desirable certification.

Category 3

New applicants who have not yet provided documentation for specific fire trainings.

Job Types

  • Seasonal / Temporary: Most contracts last for the duration of the fire season (up to 9 months).
  • Full Time: During the active season, this is a full-time commitment with extended duty weeks.
  • Benefits Eligible: Despite being temporary, these positions are eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits.

Locations

CAL FIRE operates across the entire state of California. Positions are located in:

  • Unit Headquarters: Major administrative hubs.

Requirements & Qualifications

To be appointed as a Firefighter I in 2026, you must meet the following “Trustworthiness” and physical standards:

  • Minimum Age: 18 years at the time of appointment.
  • Driver’s License: Possession of a valid Class A, B, or C license.
  • Physical Fitness: Being physically fit is vital. The role involves heavy physical work, often in extreme weather or environments containing poison oak.
  • Personal Characteristics: Must demonstrate good judgment, high ethical character, and sensitivity to the needs of injured persons.
  • Background Investigation: A criminal records check (Live Scan) is required for positions at Camps to ensure compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA).
